Silicon carbon (Si/C)

Silicon carbon (Si/C)

Silicon carbon has a higher specific capacity compared to graphite anode. At present, the main anode material for commercial lithium-ion batteries is graphite, with a theoretical specific capacity of 372 mAh/g and limited energy density improvement. The theoretical specific capacity of silicon-based materials is 4200 mAh/g, which is more than 10 times that of graphite materials. It is expected that within less than 10 years, automotive batteries with NCA or NCM cathodes and silicon based anodes will increase energy density by 50%, thereby reducing unit cost per kWh by 30-40%.

Excellent fast charging performance. Fast charging technology is also the direction of technological progress in lithium batteries, and anode materials are the key to achieving fast charging. Silicon anode materials can provide channels for lithium ion insertion and extraction from various directions. By storing lithium in smaller volumes, thinner silicon anodes enable lithium ions to reach the anode particles faster and more easily, achieving faster charging speeds.

Charging lithium is less risky and safer. The lithium insertion potential of silicon Si is higher than that of carbon materials, and the reaction activity between silicon and electrolyte is low. The risk of lithium evolution during charging is low, making the battery safer.
